They are fighting tooth and nail!
Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.) spoke to reporters during a press conference on March 2nd. During the conference with other Republican senators, they spoke about the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Senate Republicans have also spoken about the demand to keep in place the Trump-era border policy that was implemented as part of the COVID-19 response.
This stance is the result of a federal judge on Monday temporarily blocking the lift of Title 42. The Trump-era public health policy allowed migrants to be expelled from the border and even blocked them from getting asylum.
“We still need to address it. … It’s still this bizarre policy that they’re trying to put in place where COVID is toxic in some places and not in others,” said Sen. James Lankford (R-Okla.), who is leading the bipartisan proposal to keep Title 42.
Sen. John Thune (S.D.), has also hinted that the court order has not affected the GOP’s thinking.
“I think there’s still a need for Congress to try to intervene,” Thune said.
Senate Republicans also blocked a $10 million deal earlier this month that was bound to provide relief for COVID-19. This was because the Democrats did not provide the necessary votes for the amendment that would keep Title 42 in place.
Lankford’s amendment only had the support of five Democratic senators. The amendment would stop the administration from lifting Title 42. Republicans believe that a majority would allow them to get the amendment added to the coronavirus bill.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also said that Republicans would seek a Title 42 vote.
“We will need to have a Title 42 vote at some point here and in all likelihood on the COVID package,” McConnell stated.
